Philosophy as a Practice

Philosophy is a practice that includes how you sit, move, speak, think and act.

Your relationship with yourself is a direct reflection of your relationship with other humans, and with the more-than-human world. Yoga has long recognised this interconnection, as have other worldviews. But bringing this together in a way that is understandable, and that shifts how you work, walk and weave together your attitude and your practice, your way of living, is a challenge. My courses deal precisely with this challenge: how can you integrate your own attempts to live well, and to accept yourself just as you are, with your attempts to engender good relationships with others, and to appreciate, and act effectively to mitigate some of the profound harms towards, the more than human world?

My first workshop under the banner, “Know Yoga Ireland” took place a couple of weeks before the announcement of the pandemic, in beautiful Tivraun House in County Mayo, which was then owned by the wonderful Sean Cox, himself a therapist. We focused on connecting our understanding of yoga philosophy, specifically Patanjali’s but also on Yajnavalkya’s Yoga Sutras, with evolutionary theory, physics, and the implications of The Anthropocene. Around that time I created this sun salutation version.

My intention is to show how connection can take place, how we can understand and strengthen our own resilience and therefore the resilience of others, through recognising diversity, and developing practices that honour our own specific needs. Part of my own story has been having a hypersensitive brain, one feature of which is an inclination towards disconnection. Like everyone else, I’ve had to adjust and adapt, but being a philosopher really helps. It’s this I want to get across too: philosophy is a practice, and it’s as important, and fundamental, as plumbing. We need to be able to think, critically, to question, and to approach the situations we find ourselves in with a sense of curiosity, a willingness to embrace what is often contradictory and uncomfortable. Yoga allows us to do this too, and what I teach works as the intersection of the two disciplines.

Since starting this business have never been healthier. I teach what I need to learn. I still have an hypersensitive brain but I am now much less likely to lock myself into a pattern of obsessive self-recrimination. I manage, frequently, to enjoy a sense of appreciation of all that is going on, just as it is, and therefore I am able to consider how I might create connection, better communicate, and attune to compassion which can then act through me.

I don’t like metaphors of a journey: all is happening right now. And therefore I don’t like the image of going towards some utopian goal. That’s not yoga and it’s not my philosophy. It’s also not useful if we want to understand what we can do, now, in the ecological emergency. Instead of thinking of things in terms of journeys, why not imagine that you are exploring an ever expanding space, a space of consciousness that opens itself to you the more you become aware of the detail of what’s happening in and around you? This is a better image, a better story.

Much of what I teach is couched in stories, because narratives, myths and metaphors are how we see the world. I very much look forward to meeting you on my courses, and learning more about the opening that occurs when we stop focusing on then, or them, and start focusing on now, and us.

Training

I offer personal and group classes, and courses, that focus on the ecological emergency, philosophy and yoga, and the benefits of bringing ourselves more awareness of how we, and these, interrelate. Do contact me for details (I will be adding buttons for other courses). I have taught three long courses over the past year and now my focus is on creating a more philosophical focus. However all my courses have a practice aspect, since we are, after all, bodies too. Expect to meditate, practice breath control, move and stretch, and discuss and engage in exercises, finishing with a yoga nidra. Each session is two hours long to allow time for this. More time than most people think they can spare of an evening! But just enough if you want to really sense the shifts in perception, and the implications for practice, that is at the core of an effective practice.
